There are some events you photograph.

And then there are events you feel.


Being behind the camera for the Double Sefeh Torah Celebration — beginning at Chabad of Bondi and concluding at Nefesh Shul — was one of those afternoons that reminded me why documenting community moments carries so much meaning.


Before the dancing and before the procession, there was a quiet, powerful stillness. One of the most moving parts of the celebration was the ceremony of people writing the final letters in the Torah. Guided carefully by the sofer, community members stepped forward to complete the last words. The atmosphere shifted into something focused and reverent. You could feel the weight of history in the room.


Photographing that moment required slowing down. The close-up of ink meeting parchment. The steady hand holding the quill. A family leaning in just slightly, wanting to witness and dedicate a letter in the torah. Each frame held something deeply personal. These weren’t just attendees — they were becoming part of the Torah itself.


When the final letters were finished, the energy transformed. The afternoon light outside felt brighter, almost celebratory in its own way. The silver crowns of the Sefeh Torah caught the sun as the procession began, and music filled the streets. Singing echoed through Bondi as the community moved together towards Nefesh Shul.


Dancing unfolded naturally. Circles formed, widened, and pulled more people in. Children bounced with excitement. Parents held the Torah close with pride. The movement was joyful and unfiltered. Fast shutter speeds captured the Torah lifted mid-air, while wider frames revealed the strength of community spirit woven through every embrace and raised hand.


Arriving at Nefesh Shul felt like a crescendo. The dancing intensified, and the unity between both communities became unmistakable. It wasn’t simply a celebration of two Sefeh Torah. It was a celebration of continuity, connection and shared purpose.


As a photographer, afternoons like this stay with you long after the files are delivered. Not because of the volume of images, but because of what they represent — a community writing its final letters together, then stepping forward in joy.
