Hello,

It's Sam from SB Creatives Photography here....

On a glorious evening at the InterContinental Double Bay in Sydney, the Australian Friends of the Hebrew University (AUSTFHU) celebrated its centenary with sophistication and heartfelt unity. This landmark event commemorated 100 years since the founding of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem—Israel’s foremost institution of higher learning, revered for its global academic contributions and deep-rooted Jewish heritage.

Amid glittering chandeliers and distinguished guests, the prestigious Scopus Award—was presented to Sharri Markson, a notable journalist, author, and investigative reporter and presenter on Sky News Australia. In receiving the award, she also made history as the first Australian recipient, in recognition of her unwavering support of education, Israel, and the Jewish community.

Known for her bold reporting and incisive authorship, Markson has become a prominent advocate for Jewish causes and academic freedom. During her acceptance speech, she spoke passionately about Israel, the importance of truth in media, and the educational values that underpin democratic societies.

The evening featured a keynote address by His Excellency Amir Maimon, Ambassador of Israel to Australia. Appointed in February 2022, Maimon is a diplomat with decades of service—including military leadership, global postings, and involvement in humanitarian missions.

In his address, he reaffirmed the vital role that the Hebrew University plays in advancing scientific research, innovation, and peace-building. Ambassador Maimon emphasized the enduring bond between Australia and Israel—rooted in shared democratic values, academic collaboration, and cultural connection.

The evening featured an exquisite selection of kosher finger food catered by Rimon Catering, a well-respected name in Sydney’s Jewish catering scene. Guests mingled and connected over beautifully presented canapés, savoury bites, and sweet treats—thoughtfully designed to reflect both tradition and sophistication.

The standing reception format encouraged socialising and networking, adding to the event’s warm, communal atmosphere. Combined with the refined setting of the InterContinental Double Bay, the culinary experience struck the perfect balance between elegance and intimacy.

Adding warmth and cultural resonance to the event were performances by Lara, an esteemed Australian artist, whose soulful interpretations of Jewish melodies and celebratory songs stirred the audience. Her set bridged faith, memory, and hope—enhancing the evening’s spiritual and communal tone.

Community, Legacy, and Looking Forward

Attended by community leaders, academic partners, philanthropists, and diplomatic guests, the gala captured the collective pride in a century of academic achievement and Jewish contribution. As Ambassador Maimon and Sharri Markson both noted, the evening reaffirmed the importance of education in safeguarding identity, building connections, and nurturing future generations.

As the Hebrew University embarks on its second century, its mission remains as vital as ever—and the support of organisations like AFHU ensures that Australian voices and values will continue to contribute to its globally respected legacy.
